The Board states it is taking this step due to deficiencies in Tulare Lake’s groundwater sustainability plan (GSP) and given the basin’s conditions. Tulare Lake is being prioritized by the Board as a result of dry wells and subsidence interfering with infrastructure and impacting local communities.
Eric Oppenheimer, chief deputy director for the State Water Board, said, “No decision has been made yet about whether Tulare Lake will be designated as a probationary basin; the comment period on the staff report and the later public hearing are key opportunities for people to make their voices heard.”
A 60-day public comment period is now open to receive stakeholder input for the Board’s final draft report for Tulare Lake.
November workshops
Board staff will hold two November workshops to walk through its draft report on the Tulare Lake groundwater basin and provide details about how to participate in the board’s process. An online workshop is scheduled on November 3 at 11 a.m. and the in-person workshop is set for November 8 at 6 p.m.
